Web Article: Cuba and its dissidents move battle to theinternet By Shasta Darlington, CNN
This article talks about how Cuban citizens are becoming more suficient in using the internet and Cuban goverment officials are getting worried that it will become a thret towards the goverment. An almost completly annonomous source posted a video online showing a lecture given to what looks like Cuban Goverment officials saying that the internet is not a bad thing, however, they need to learn to use it to their advantage and know how to know what they "enemy" is trying to do with it. (enemy being Cuban citizens who disagree with the Cuban goverment.)
The article aslo talks about how Cuban officials have jailed U.S citizen, Alan Gross (subcontractor for USAID). Cuban Officials have acused him of distributing iligal satalite equipment to Cuban citizens that help them connect to the internet. However, his family in the U.S say he was working over there with Jewish groups. Gross could spend up to 20 years in prison in Cuba.
This article is interesting to me becuase not only would I would love to see the people of Cuba recieve much needed freedom, but it is scary to think of US citizens being held up over there. This article is also ironic because Cuba blamed US for many years of giving way of internet use to Cuban citizens, however, officials are learning to use the internet to their advantage and are creating a new network connecting internet with Venezuela this summer.
